When you DON’T need a coach

When you DON'T need a coach

I was feeling slightly shaky about my finances in December, so I typed “money coach” into google. A million offers from financial advisors to wealth and abundance coaches popped up. I know that all these have great spaces in people’s lives, but I couldn’t help feeling deep empathy for someone looking for a coach. It can be daunting. So, I’ve put together some context around this for you.

Ok, first things first. If you are coach curious:

  • Are you looking for guarantees or promises that you would never give your own customers, children or dating relationships?
  • Are you really in the market for a therapist rather than a coach – someone to specifically help you address your mental health issues like anxiety and depression?
  • Are you in the market for a pre programmed package –  someone to give you advice or tell you what to do? Or keep an accountability tracker for you?

THEN YOU DON’T NEED A COACH!

Read further if what you want isn’t falling neatly into any of the boxes above.

Really impactful coaching relies in large part on what both the coach and client bring to the relationship, which they carefully design together. Like any committed and intentional relationship, you get to know each other, you flesh out what kind of impact you want to create in your life, and the actions and objectives you want to take towards it.

Coaches then coach their clients to find their resourcefulness and creativity around their objectives, and do not try to solve their client’s problems for them. We take a stand for you – that when you are your naturally creative and resourceful self, you are capable of addressing what’s challenging you with more than adequate intelligence and perspective.

The role of a truly impactful coach is to hold you in and to your wholeness. This means coaches are skilled at:

  • Listening for the stories you stuck in (evoking self awareness)
  • Helping you define your self worth (discern between what your imposter has to say versus the real you)
  • Holding spaces for you to evoke transformation through self – learning and self – regulation.

When these come together, you become that person who connects with your world around you, albeit from a very different mindset than the one that created the problem in the first place.

I coach humans first. They just happen to be leaders, managers, coaches, entrepreneurs and artists between the age of 30 – 50. I do this because I was once that person who happens to know what it’s like to be thrown into a world where you are wracked with imposter, hyper achievement and drive, yet may be suffering from low worth and not feeling seen and heard.

In a world where the language of leadership is rapidly evolving, some things remain unchanged. Just like other humans, anyone who takes charge of their team, family, dreams and their life, also wants love. They also struggle with self-doubt, self -worth and self-sabotage. Some of the most professionally successful people I’ve worked with are high potential achievers and may have other areas of their lives that are falling apart. Some of my clients are great at their rational decisions, and struggle with giving permission to their teams and spouses to access them emotionally or as human beings.

As for those questions you may have been asking before, my experience time and time again has been that clients report fantastic results once they really see their goals, often very differently, as a result of self-awareness. Clients also report that coaching conversations can feel therapeutic, and since they didn’t have to follow a prescribed program, they were able to bring topics customized to their specific life experiences in the present moment.

Coaches can provide you with this experience as our training and credentials equip us with specialized listening, powerful questions, creating deep connection, and embodiment in a short period of time. We are attached to your agenda, not our way of looking at it.

“The way you holistically approach your clients is the new way of leadership coaching. You helped me to step into discomfort and to feel safe enough not to run away” said a client who is both a leader and customer service expert.

“After we closed today’s session, I was reflecting, and I am amazed at how successful and rewarding this coaching has been for me” Leader at a well-known tech company.

Everyone comes to coaching with a starting point: a goal, an intention, a commitment. What they leave with is an undeniable witnessing of their own personal power, their magnificence, and a sense that they don’t have to go anywhere else to “fix” themselves. A life of fulfilment can be lived right here and now. This is what coaching can do for you.
